Three quick questions:

  1. What is the best way to go from Negombo to Dambulla, with a stop off a the Pinnewella elephant orphanage? Since it seems to be a popular route, is there a tourist bus that makes the trip? If I hire a car/driver, how much should I expect to pay?

  2. When in Kandy, I would like to take a scenic train ride. Which is the best route/train to take, and to which destination? Is it possible to take an early train, stop off somewhere like Nuriya Elia for a few hours, then take a later train back into Kandy or all the way to Colombo?

  3. Is it pretty easy to get from Kandy to Galle? Are there frequent buses? How long is the journey?

Did research on the above three, but there's conflicting, outdated and/or incomplete information. Thanks!

Hi!

  1. You can find buses to go this route, but no direct bus. From Negombo, i think you must go to colombo to catch a bus to Kegalle. From Kegalle to Orphanage another bus or tuk tuk. And again another bus from Kegalle to Dambulla. I don't know if it's possible to do it in one day...

2 and 3, same answer than above...

You can get the early morning train from Kandy to the coast. It stops at Columbo, but you don't need to change as it just carries on and takes you down through Hikkaduwa and on to Galle etc. Very cheap, very scenic, recommended rather than a bus as you get on at the start of the journey so you can get a seat and watch the world go by.

Hi sudi
As you said to catch a buses in mentioned route
Air port – negombo = bus
Negombo – kegalle = another bus
Kegalle – karadupana junction = another bus
Junction –orphanage = bus or tuck tuck
Orphanage – rambulkkan =another bus
Ranbukkana – kurunegala= another bus
Kurunegala- dambulla = another bus

Practically you have to spend all the day in the buses.

Thanks,

Hi flamante ,

Best method is Come to Colombo (cost 45min-1h and Rs100), then take a bus to Kandy (cost 3h and Rs250) and get off from karadupana junction and take a tuk tuk to orphanage (cost 30min).
Then come back to Kegalle by a Tuk Tuk and take a bus to Rambukkana(30min). and Ranbukkana – kurunegala by another bus (min45).
From kurunegala you can go to Dambulla by a bus within 1h and cost is under Rs200.
From Dambulla you can take a bus to Kandy(cost 1.5h-2h Rs 150).
Then I think you have to spent the night at Kandy.
Take early morning train to Nuwara Eliya(I'm not sure about the cost and time I can check train schedules and send a message if you need) and Come Back by a bus(i.5h and Rs 200).
Take the diract train to Matara via Galle or come to Colombo and get a bus to Galle, buses leaves every 15 min(cost 4h and under Rs 300).
You can complete this by 3 days or even in 2 days, but I recommend to take 4 days otherwise you'll get too tired and bored. best is bellow.
1st day : - Negombo - Pinnawala orphanage -Dambulla ----Stay night at Dambulla
2nd day : - Dambulla - Kandy - Nuwara Eliya - Kandy ---- Stay at Kandy
3rd day :- Kandy - Galle via Colombo ---- stay at Galle
4th day : - Galle - Katunayake airport via Colombo.
