Hey all,
I have a family of six - my husband and I and four children between 9 and 21 - and we are really keen for bushwalking/nature and were wondering if anyone could give us some advice on places to go in Sri Lanka? Nothing too busy or preferably quiter places? If we do go we will be there for most of January.

A few places that I'd recommend.
Haputale... A small busy mountain town, set on a ridge so amazing views all around. Surrounded by mountains , valleys, tea plantations ec.
Ella, a little further south of Haputale,, Ella is a small sleepy village. Again fabulous views every where and great country side to walk through.
Badulla, bigger mountain town, again surrounded by mountains but here they are a bit more less planted and more forested.
All those three are easy to access,, just get the train from Colombo to Kandy. stay a few days to look around there, then get the train again, going south through the hill country. The line passes through Haputale and Ella then finishes at Badulla.
Another area well worth rambling is the Knuckles mountain range, north of Kandy, easily accessed from Matale.
Completely unspoilt area, beautiful scenery.
The first three have pleny of choice of excellent guest houses. Not many in the Knuckles but a few.

I would like to ask a few more questions before deciding on a holiday destination for our family.
Does Sri Lanka have some good snorkelling locations that are safe for a family to explore?
Is it easy to get around in Sri Lanka with a family of six?
Are the Sri Lankan people quite healthy, ro do you think there are some serious health risks in Sri Lanka?
Are there trekking opportunities in Sri Lanka?
Is there much wildlife left in the country?
If you were going to choose between lets say having a nature based family holiday in Sri Lanka or the Phiilippines (Palawan) or Vietnam? Which country would you choose?

I spent a bit of time in the Knuckles Range earlier this year. It is excellent for what you describe - very exciting to find a fresh leopard print on the path! It is easy to reach from Kandy and you should be able to organise a guide for a day trip or longer from Kandy.
