Hi everybody!

On our way back from Kandy to Colombo we would like to visit the elephant orphanage at Pinnawela.

Anybody an idea how long it would take us to get there? An what is the best option, by train or by taxi?

Thanx for any info.

Hello,
There are two options, well three if you count a hired vehicle.
Pinnawela is located along a road which runs between a); the main Kandy to Colombo road and b); the train line between Kandy and Colombo. The village closest to the orphanage is actually famous for leather work, or at leaste the stall/shops, which have nearby factories or workplaces, and is just a short walk from the river (used for bathing purposes for the elephants).
I prefer the bus option. Its cheap and easy.
From Kandy- the stop is one of the first going into the woodshed bus station(on the left near a info hut , anyone will know) . Mostly you could also catch the Colombo bus from here but, drivers and any supporters will try to persuade you to take the Kegalle bus. Reason being that the seat will or may, be empty from Kegalle to Colombo.
The fare should be around 50-100rs, I haven't been for a while so can't be exact but, pretty cheap. Ask the conductor or driver to tell you when they reach the Pinnawela orphanage turn. Here the bus stops just across the road from the turning fot the elephant orphanage. Cross the road and there you can get a small bus for around 14rs or a three wheeler for around 200rs. (its about 9 miles). Everyone knows the place and you will doubtless see other tourists.
Once you have been to the orphanage just get back to the main Kandy to Colombo road and catch the next bus going to Colombo. I recomend the orphanage, its great. Never mind that it was set up to atract tourists, its actually doing fine.

I caught the local bus which was really cheap and very easy. The local people are more than happy to give you a hand if you need help. Ask around when you're in Kandy (maybe your hotel) and they should point you in the right direction.

It takes about an hour and 15 minutes from Kandy. Depending on the traffic obviously.
