I'm thinking of taking a two week holiday in Sri lanka with my wife. We'd like a week touring and a week by the beach. can anyone recommend a good tour guide to organise things with and the best time to go?

Hi muriele,
Best times,, well, mid December to mid April is the best in the south and west for weather.Thats where the main hotels/ resorts are.
June , July and August best for the east and north for weather.
I prefer August and September .. it does rain a little in the south west during those months but not too much and keeps everything really fresh and green.Plus in August/Sept. time there's not so many tourists around although thats a personal choice, lots of visitors prefer being in a crowd.
I'll send you a PM with info on a few drivers... It's worth getting a few quotes and comparing. Not just the price though, try to sus. out how good their English, knowledge, etc. if they are Licenced by the Ceylon Toutrist Board you know they are Ok,.

I do not believe it is against the rules to recommend specific people or services in a forum like this. After all that is what this forum is all about. Rod did not POST or openly advertise this information for all to see, he simply PM'd it to people who asked. No harm in that. I read your post and sincerely if I wanted to just Google to find information there would be no need for a forum like this one now would there?

Hi gayaipw,
I know , no such thing.
Does this rule of yours extend to cover guesthouses, or sites to visit , perhaps which trees to look at ?.
If I think one particular route is better or quicker or safer than another, I'm gona say so and recommend it.
if I know a few drivers who are also licenced by the tourist board and I know from personal experience are excellent guides, reliable and honest, then I'm gonna say so and recommend them.
I do always qualify that recommendation by advising people to get as many quotes as possible from different driver/guides and comparing..before accepting anybody.
Oh yea, the Ceylon Tourist Board licence isn't a new thing. Some guides are only licenced as local guides ,,some , who have passed the relevant tests are fully approved and some drivers who advertise as guides are not guides at all, just drivers.
Hiring one of the none official guys means that any tourist being taken to a site by them , then has to hire themselves an additional local guide ....Costing double the money..
Any un licenced driver, caught acting as a guide around sites such as the ancient cities, etc can be arrested which could leave the tourist stuck with no transport, perhaps all his / her money and, clothes etc, locked in a van they have no access to.
I did read your other post and it made about as much sense to me as this one. If you don't like anything I write, just don't bother to read it, as simple as that.
Everything, I or anyone else posts on here is a personal opinion, you've got mine.

Hi,
I read this post with interest as I too am going to Sri Lanka for two weeks. My boyfriend and I have booked direct flights for the first half of September, and have started researching with earnest!
Rod, I'd love to receive the information you were going to send to the other poster, with driver recommendations and any other words of wisdom about Sri Lanka.
Thanks so much!
