I am a real whimp, I have not travelled very much but for my 60th I am with my husband and 4 others choosing to go to Sri Lanka I have booked into the Pandanus Hotel. I am now reading that it is not a very good hotel and not near anything to do tours etc. Can anyone reassure me that I have not made an awful mistake!!
hi I cant advice you on the hotel you are staying in as i have never stayed there. Inuruwa is situated on a very popular stretch of coastline with fine beaches and nearby towns like Bentota. I have never been to Bentota but i would be very surprised if there werent tour operators there that you could use. have you checked your hotel? many hotels will be able to arrange tours as well. Where to go and what to do depends on your interests (which you dont mention so hard to recommend activities/places to go)and the lenght of your trip. A very popular way to travel around Sri Lanka is to hire a car and driver, this will cost approx $50 a day.

I haven't actually been to Sri Lanka yet (although I am extremely well travelled) and I am just in the planning stage. However, I have earmarked Induruwa as the most atttractive looking beach to stay at for a few days - and was also looking at the Pandanus hotel (although it's probably a bit pricey for us). Induruwa is close to a railway line so easy to get to places of interest such as Galle. There's also a national park not so far away. So I think you've made an excellent choice!
I am in the same spot as #4. However, I would simply be amazed if #3 was not correct. Higher end hotels have these connections! I had the joy of going that way twice recently (under spousal orders) and they left no stone unturned in order to arrange tours, etc..
I forgot to mention I hope you have already done a bit of research into the monsoon seasons in Sri Lanka, the best time to visit the west and south coasts is November - March. The summer months are in the monsoon season where there will be more rain and unsafe beaches.

Thank you for all my replies. Has anyone stayed at the Pandanus hotel? We are going for new year Does anyone know do they have any celebration dancing x

I think you need to make the enquiry with the hotel as to what celebrations they may or may not have over new year. Very few trains stop at the Induruwa and Bentota train stations but all trains stop at Ahangama which is about 10-15 minutes by tuktuk. The hotel is right on Galle Road so buses are right outside; also hiring a driver and vehicle is a good option. It is an hour (by road) from Hikkaduwa, and Galle a further 20 mins past Hikkaduwa. The beach is calm at that time of the year. There are a lot of larger hotels along that stretch of beach and Bentota is mainly large hotels. Ahangama is a nice typical Sri Lankan town. You can do tours from anywhere – the hotel can organise for you or you will find lots of people who are “tour guides” around (every second person is a “tour guide); you just need to shop around for the best deals.
