Hi Everyone

I'm heading to the south of the country next week. Looking for a hassle free relaxing beach town. Any ideas?

Thanks

Cormac

Hi,
do you really want a town with a beach,? Or a village with a beach or just a beautiful beach with just a few local houses scattered around in the coconut groves which surround the beach.
Personally, I never feel hassled in the two most popullar beach towns in the south west. Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna.
If you want quieter than that you could go a little further along the south coast to Mirissa.Lovely beach, plenty of accomodation and surrounded by little lanes lined by local houses.
Or, if you want access to a bigger town, a little more along the coast is Polhenna. A small beach used almost entirely by locals. Polhenna like a suburb of Matara . Matara is busy , plenty of shops, cafes, a market, end of the west coast railway , all you could want in a town but 5 minutes in a tuk tuk get you to Polhenna beach where it's very quiet. beach is quite small and lots of broken coral on which can make you hop a bit.
Or, go further along to Dikwella, Tangalle area. My favorite guest house, The Kadolana Beach Resort, is half way between those two. Huge empty, beautiful beach, great guest house and a short bus ride into either Dikwella or Tangalle.

Thanks a million Rod, once again you've been extremely helpful. The south coast sounds pretty easy to get around so i might try a few places. Do you have the contact details for the Kadalona Beach Resort? Also, do you know how much the rooms cost?

Thanks!

Cormac

Hello again,
The kadolana Beach Resort,
Bandara Watta,
Kemagoda,
Nilwella,......Dikwella.
Tel;....+94-(0)-41-2256140.....
Sorry, I've got no email address for them but the guy that runs it, Sunny ( Sunil ) speaks good English so you could phone him when you get into the country.
All good rooms , downstairs each with a verandah and upstairs all with a balcony. All look out over the sea. Food is excelent especially the sea food.
A lovely beach and rarely more than a few local kids on it.
You can get the train to matara from Colombo or anywhere in between. From Matara get a bus or a tuk tuk.
Sorry, Can't say the price as they've been changing so much in Lanka lately and as in all guest houses they change a bit depending on how busy they are or what season it is.
Rod.
