Hi there,

I'm a 26 year old female from the UK, travelling to Sri Lanka independently on 27th November for 4 weeks.

I just wanted to see if anyone has any specific safety advice or tips for me to be aware of while I am away? I've read that Sri Lanka is generally a safe country to travel around however it is one of the first places I will be going solo and so anything that might help me be prepared and build my confidence would be very helpful!

If anyone else is also travelling to Sri Lanka during this period and want to meet up then let me know!

Many thanks,
Holly

I'd advise a first night in Negombo, which is full of tourists and tourist facilities. This will help you to get a feel for Sri Lanka. You may even meet other travellers if you choose budget accommodation. You can then travel on from there.

I'm male, but have travelled extensively in SL on my own and think it is a fairly safe country for anyone. If you take all the usual precautions you should be OK. Things to avoid are walking alone on a beach at night, taking care with offers of lift or meals or accommodation, etc.

As a solo female you may be targeted a bit by some of the young men, local and foreign b ut again, just use the usual caution. You will probably get more grief from men trying to get you to use their tuk tuk than from trying to chat you up.

Absolutely no need to be paranoid.

Get a good guide book to see what interests you. There is very little that anyone can recommend that won't be covered in such a book.

I traveled there solo in 2015 Nov. It's a very touristy yet Beautiful country. You would meet tons of travelers everywhere.
The only thing that bugged me was men passing comments on the streets ALL the time. I had completely lost it one day and screamed at one guy who wouldn't leave me alone but mostly it was harmless.
I did not however go out alone late in the evening. Someone had tried to snatch the wallet off a girl from my hostel dorm while she was walking back alone to the hostel at around 9 p.m.

Hey Simon

Thanks for your sound advice, I've had a look at Negombo and booked my first two nights at a hostel here to ease me in. And good to know, i'm expecting a few people trying to sell me things so no different to most travels in that respect! Thanks again, Holly

Hi there - thank you for your comment. Whenever i'm alone i'm going to be getting up early and going to bed early so as to avoid being out a night on my own, so thank you.
