Public transport is more cheaper than cabs. But it is unnecessary time consuming and delays. End to end connecting is not available with public transport system. Eg.Trans or buses. By the end point of public transport again you need to use the cab service. My last travel of SL I met a Lady Driver with a cab and she charged me very reasonable price. If you need I can share it.

Trust worthy drivers are there but plan your trip properly and know where you are going . I wish you have a male in your group but you shouldn't worry much about that. A matured / retired type of a driver would be ideal for you all. If you face any difficulties contact me, I'll be there for few weeks during December for my vacation. I am a Sri Lankan living abroad.

Finding a trustworthy driver will not be a big issue here, but the cost will defenitly be a problem. If u wish to get in touch i ll help u to find during this tour. Me and my girl friend will also be traveling arround these days.
