damaged currency notes not valid anymore from Jan 1st

Now in Negombo and the lady where I stay told me to take care as any damaged note won' t be valid from Jan. 1st.
It also NOT possible to change them at banks any more, so take extra care when receiving change back.
What damaged notes means is not clear, though.
Time will tell If even banknotes that are scribbled or have a number on it won' t be accepted and changed
Everybody talks about that these days, the new rule appeared in several newspapers as well.

I’ve been to a bank in Kandy today. The redemption period has been extended until end of March this year.
