I want to thank the few people that sent me recs for budget hotels. However, after discovering that they werent very central. i cinvinced my partner that we splurge a bit in Colombo. We have found that some top end hotel rooms are offred online for 45 Euros. We like the central location as we want to sightsee during the day and go out at night since where we live there are no nightclubs and little nightlife.
I saw that the Taj Samdura or Cinnamon Grand have good online deals but the reviews on trip advisor are awful. Does anyone have a good experience at one of these places or Trans Asia. I really wanted to stay at Galle Face because friends rave about it but the cheapest rate I can find online is about 70 Euros or 90 USD. We are staing in Colombo on 4th and 5th of January so its peak season... normally the discount rates at Galle Face are doable.
So please any recomendations for places that are less than 50 or 60 dollars per night and central and a little luxourious feeling. After all this will be a splurge since we are traveling for three weeks and need to keep costs in check.

Stayed at the Galle face for $67 (USD) including Breakfast - arranged through a Colombo Travel Agent. Rates right now on the Hotel's own web site are $77 (USD) for a standard room in the 'Classic' wing.

Worth every cent - it's a unique colonial relic - still functioning in the Grand old style.
I know it sounds wonderful. but after the 24th of December there is supposed to be a 25 USD surcharge. Do you think a Colombo travel agent could get around that?
Depends on occupancy I suppose. Worth a try. There is another old, once grand hotel available - not in the same class as the Galle Face - but........
Grand Oriental Hotel - Colombo
Hotel Club has it for about $57 USD for a double - including breakfast. It's also a refurbished old colonial Hotel; but not so well positioned.
