I am looking for a cheap guest house for my first night in Sri Lanka. Any suggestions welcome - is it indeed worth staying in Colombo - heard mixed reports.
Thanks
Rebecca

Hi bekka,
Is it worth staying in Colombo,?, well, really it depends on few factors. What time your flight gets in, where you're going next, and onward travel method. and maybe if you wanted the shopping at places like O'Dells, etc.
If you're moving on early next morning and have a train to catch from Colombo, then obviously, thats where you wanna be.
If you have any particular place to visit or go in Colomobo, then likewise.
If you just wanna get to Sri Lanka, find a nice , friendly place, not too far away, where you can chill for a while, sip a cold beer or two, maybe stroll around the town or on the beach, then Negombo is the best option. Only twenty minutes from the airport , has lots of choice of places to stay, lots of small bars and restaurants, shops, etc.
Couple of places that come up regularly among the members on here.
The Silver Sands guest house, 229 Lewis Place, Negombo.. Tel; 94-(0)-31-2222880 www.silversands.go2lk.com<BR> Friendly guest house, food is Ok, rooms , last time I stayed there were a bit worn but clean, I've heard that some have been renovated since then. Plenty of small restaurants, bars etc around and backs onto the beach , although that stretch of beach wasn't looking very good when I was there about 3 months ago.
The Oasis Beach resort, ( and fish and lobster restaurant). 31 Poruthota Road, Ethukala, Negombo. Tel; +94-(0)-31-2279022
Budget hotel, rooms are bigger and brighter than Silver Sands. Has two excellent restaurant areas, one looking out over the beach and one over the street. Good swimming pool, which I find great after a long flight. Also opens out at the rear onto the beach and a much cleaner section of beach. Also plenty of small bars , restaurants and shops around. Bit more money than the Silver Sands but my preference.
If you do go into Colombo, Personally, I only have bad experience of guest houses there but one member on here used to recommend a place that I liked the look of. Wadiwadiman used to stay at,
Mrs Nanayakara's Guest House, ( 20 ? ) Chelsea Gardens, Colombo. Tel; 94-(0)-2277186
I went to this place, and it looked excellent. Like a little cottage tucked away in a quite road but close to the centre. Unfortunately, when I went , there was no room available and I ended up in a rubbish place .
Over all, Negombo is much easier and for me, much better.
Rod.
