Were going to be in Sri Lanka for three weeks over New Year and January and travelling around - I need to be reachable for family reasons - but don't want to take my European-based celphone because might get friends calling me up to chat.

Anyone know if it's possible to buy a Sri Lankan SIM card and then send the new phone number to family back home for emergencies ? I thought in-coming calls would be free but one Sri lanka hotel emailed me asking me not to call them on their cellphone number since they are charged v high prices for incoming overseas calls - if this is so it defeats the purpose of my plan...

Any ideas grateefully received

SIM card plus 200 rupees worth of calls cost 600 rupees ( 25p, half a dollar or so). Cancel your diverts as you are charges at the international rate whiklst your friends babble on asking you to phone them or worse still when your number is called accidentally you are stll charged for one of those endless messagers until the caller realises !
You can always ask your friends to tect your home country number as incoming texts are free.

Once in Sri Lanka you can buy a sim card through dialog. There's quite a few shops but the one in crescut (a plaza attached to Cinnamon Grand) can issue them quite quickly.
I don't think I was charged for incoming calls....but will check and get back to you.
