Hi all,

We've read many posts that say 'don't drive yourself'...but we are confident this is the best options for us, for at least part of the journey. I've had a look online and emailed quite a few car hire places as the websites don't show availability when I select a different drop-off from the pick-up.

We are planning to travel:
*Colombo to Sigiriya and then down to Kandy, this could be with a driver or self-drive
*Then we take the train from Kandy to Ella (hence this is not a round trip)
*Ella back to Colombo via the beaches, we would like to do this section self-drive

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations for this? After Ella we are stopping for some days here and there and hiring a driver for the entire week makes no sense to us.

I'm now back in Colombo having driven 1100 km around Sri Lanka in a week - Colombo-Dambulla-Sigriya-Minneriya-Nilaveli-Polonnaruwa-Kandy-Nuwara Eliya-Colombo - so yes it is doable. Just go slowly (many times you have no option!) and keep your wits about you. I used Sixt but there are other options. I'm working here and have driven in loads of countries all over the world - it's better than some and worse than some.

but i felt to reply this as this will help other travelers to get something from this form.
as you inquiry about self driven topic and seen many replies on chauffer driven.
yes there are few good companies around Colombo as they strictly provide vehicles for vacation travelers who on vacation such as Malkey,Queens,Advent,Kings rent a car services in Greater Colombo.
Of course they are online and provide real time availability and rates.
In searching of Adventure tour in advent community in Sri Lanka those best places to be visited.
providing driving license endorsement facilities in one of important factor.
if any of you self drive vehicles in a wide range to be selected connect via above advent people mentioned in rent a car field.

Hi Nicola, which car hire company did you go with? Was it a good experience? I ask because I will be going to Sri Lanka soon and plan to hire a self drive a mini van which I can pick up either from the airport or Colombo.
