Head to Hikkaduwa or try Matara (very sleepy), Tangalle (very sleepy), or Unawatuna (kind of scary cos full of too many old tourists), or head round to Aragum Bay.

Its so cheap that $100US a day is probably way too much!

My partner and I shared a comfortable room with a bathroom on the beach for 700 rupees a night, about $9AUD

Beer, food is cheap and tasty, don't be afraid to eat at the various Roti stalls on the street and try a local lunch pack!

If you have few weeks holiday, you can try all the beaches... the choice depend on what you like, unawatuna and hikkaduwa are fun with many bars, restaurants, discos, tourists shops,.... Tangalle is non touristic, very quiet, wild beach, fisher village and harbour. Mirissa is also quiet but more touristic. i don't know arumga bay and matara beach.

With your budget, you can have almost all the hotels you like, maybe not the 5 stars...
