Considering a winter holiday in Sri Lanka and looking at Bentota as a possible base. However, I did read that there are no beach bars in Bentota. Do Sri Lankan beaches generally not have bars on the beach? We like beach time but prefer sitting in a bar to actually lying on the beach. Or could anyone recommend a laid back kind of place as a base that does have beach bars. And generally: is Bentota a nice place and a good place for excursions to attractive places nearby?
Thanks!

Bentota is actually a Muslim area coincidentally . There will be wine shops where you can get your fix and large hotels too but sitting on the beach with a beer would be looked down on ,at least I wouldnt be comfortable doing it ..

The alcohol in SL is generally of a low quality . Lion lager ugh real hangover material .
Its a nice place though with your needs Id suggest Hikkaduwa .

Thanks for that. I'm only in the first stages of research and didn't realise that Bentota is a Muslim area. I'm now looking into Hikkaduwa and Induruwa as Bentota seems to be a bit too upmarket/package holiday-oriented for us. Although we are no longer young and like a bit of comfort nowadays we'd still prefer somewhere with a bit of a backpacker/independent traveller vibe but without being too much of a party place. I probably should have phrased my question differently - there do seem to be restaurants as opposed to bars on some beaches (I'm just after somewhere outside a hotel where you can relax with food, drink and a view of the sea).
