I asked a few shops and the cheapest price I got for a 10 megapixel camera is 19,500 rupees.

I hear you can bargain in Sri Lanka. What price could this be bargained down to? I'm thinkinf if they don't go any lower I'll ask for a memory card to be thrown in, but of course if they can do that and bring it down to say 18,000 it would be good. I don't know how Sri Lankans bargain so not sure how should be expected.

Hi Tiemu,
I don't think you'll find many bargains in anything electronic in Sri Lanka. The market isn't big enough there to warrent competition, not like Malaysia , so prices are usualy high.
If I were you, I'd check internet prices for the model camera you're thinking about and compare the price offered.
At least the, you'd have a bit of knowledge to start bargaining with.
But, yes,,, if you go ahead and buy,, then bargain for it.
Rod.

In my experience bargaining is not as successful for this sort of purchase as it would be for cheaper everyday goods. There is no harm in asking for "local price" or last price and I would always do it for any purchase in SL, but in this case I would not be surprised if there was little or no discount. For most goods the initial price is dependent on your appearance and manner - ie how rich do you look, but in general an expensive camera will have a prioper price tag attached. So it is down to you to persuade the manager that you are not very wealthy but really need the camera. You might get a small reduction if you negotiate in a pleasant way with a bit of humour - aggressive bargaining is less likely to succeed in my experience. You may get the card included, that might be a good result. Do let us know how you get on.
