Fellow Travellers,

Understand that Arugum Bay might be a bit wet in December (thats ok) but really wanted to know if there is a 'vibe' at this time of the year and are many bars/restaurants/hotels open??

We are very much beach loving people and normally love to visit surfer/backpacker towns.

Any insights are much appreciated.

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon
As you know December is not the season to go to Arugam Bay.But I cannot assure that the Bars,Restaurants, hotels are open. However in Down South Unawatuna and Weligama is best for Surfing and they are famous backpacker towns as well.

All the Best

Sam

Hi Simon,
I was in Arugambay beginning of January 2015. It's not the surfing season but it was dry and places were open. A great place to stay is Beach hut. You can also rent a bicycle and go towards Magul Maha Vihara and Kumana National Park (entrance by jeep only).

Thx Jep- do you know if you can do a full Safari Experience from the Arugum Bay side of Yala?? (ie. jeep with elephants/leopards etc??)

I was there late Feb this year and it was very dead. The weather was OK and I wondered why more people weren't there as accommodation was very cheap. I posted on here about it, search for it if you want.

When in December may be important I imagine that around Christmas it may liven up a bit as people escape the crowded beaches.

I think it is always possible to do a safari, but if you are the only one then it will be more expensive.

Yes, you can surely organise it from Arugambay, but better try to join with other people . Kumana National Park is the new name for West Yalla Park, and so much quieter than the overcrowded East Yalla Park.
