Hello!

I'm looking to spend some time with friends in Sri Lanka near Columbo for 4-5 days before going to Maldives or Delhi... Going in mid-march.

I'm looking for suggestions for routes to get the most out of my time there. I was thinking of getting out of Columbo by train towards Kandy and then maybe Ella, looping around to the Horton Plains park and back to Columbo. Although we may rent a car if it fits in the budget.

We prefer more outdoor experiences, national parks, the ancient temples and seeing the unique architecture. Could do without most museums and tourist traps.

Any recommendations to make the most of the 5 days near Columbo? Favorite spots to eat? best ways to get around? stuff you wish you did?

Thanks in advance!

It is a well known route of tourists to visit Ella through Kandy. And you will never be dissapointed in that route, since it is the most beautiful train route in Sri Lanka. You may manage it with 4-5 days.

But to visit ancient temples with ancient architecture you have to visit Anuradhapura or Polonnaruwa. Because those two areas have the best sites in this regard. But given your time frame you can't cover both directions. You will have to choose one.
