Just checked the departures from Colombo.....there are lots of departures in the middle of the night! I guess they don't care so much about noise pollution!

actually the reason is total flights that checked in 24 hours now have to do within 18 hours.. that why lots of flights in the time you departing

Lots of stuff on the web about airport closure. I know my flight in is arriving earlier in the morning than usual.

Here is something I copied from the web:

"From Jan. 6 to April 5 2017 Bandaranaike International Airport will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. It will be open outside those hours, but airlines will have to reschedule, reroute or cancel many daylight flights."

If you are planing to travel by train, Do the booking as early as possible ! Since it is long weekend for locals; there was a long queue for railway reservations at Colombo Fort Railway Station today

I was looking at taking the bus from the airport to Dambulla but it seems there is no express bus so it takes 6 hours! I have tried to find out the price of a taxi but again it seems there are so many different fares quoted online. How much should I may maximum to Dambulla from the airport?
How long does it take to get from Dambulla to Nuwara Eliya by bus? Would it be wise to take a car and driver from Dambulla to NE?

Thanks again for your help
Dan

no it will not take 6 hours.. Best is to avoid Colombo ..so take a tuk tuk from air port to Minuwangoda (LKR 350 max and only 11 km). from there catch a direct bus towards Kurunegala (1.5 -2 hours). from Kurunegala take a bus towards Anuradhapura( route 15) or Polonnaruwa / Kaduruwela(route 48). from there another 1.5 hours you will reach to Dambulla town... from Dambulla again tuk tuk to Hotel..

and yeah from Dambulla to Ella definitely go with a driver..with public transport that route will be very far and tiring..So air port to Dambulla by public transport and Dambulla to Ella by taxi.. it will make u eaiser
