Hi,

Me, my wife and our 2.5 year-old daughter are going to Sri-Lanka in January for 15 days.
We have put together an itinerary based on guide book and some reading here and would like to have your experienced input and tips on it.
We haven't Included Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa in this itinerary since we thought it might be too tiring for our 2-year-old with a climb to Sigiriya Rock since we already want to do Adam's Peak. What are your thoughts about that?
Also we don't want to stay in too many places, and rather stay in one place and do daytrips if possible.

  • 15th-16th Arrive in airport and stay in Negombo for 2 nights (we arrive during the night on 15th). Accomodation: Hotel
  • 16th leave for Kandy. With driver or train?
  • 16th-18th stay in Kandy, see the city and temple visits. Accomodation: Hotel or guesthouse?
  • 18th-20th take the train from Kandy to Ella. Stay in Ella for 2 nights. Accomodation: Hotel or guesthouse?
-** 20th-21th** Go from Ella to Adam's peak and stay in a guesthouse nearby before the climb. I know it could be a struggle with a 2-year-old.** What is the best time to do it to avoid the crowds and for best view? Where to stay before the climb, closest village/city?**
-21th Drive from Adam's peak to Udawale National Park. Do the safari. All in one day possible?
-21th-24th Drive to Tangalla/Mirissa and stay for 3 nights. Beach. Whale watching.
-24th-27th Go to Hikkiduwa and stay for 3 nights for scuba diving. Maybe visit Galle fort on a daytrip?
  • 27th - 31th Go and stay in Bentota in a hotel for last days. Leave from Bentota directly to the airport on 31th of January.

I would appreciate all tips, inputs, and No's and Don't s

I would take the train, not a car. Much nicer way to travel. We are taking the train up to Kandy just after New Year. :-)

Thanks for your reply.
I was worried it would be difficult with a child and luggage. But I guess with a first class or second class ticket it should be fine. Did you buy your tickets online or do you plan to get it in Colombo?

I always find travelling by train the safest and most relaxing way to travel. A friend of ours', whom we are meeting up with in Colombo, bought the tickets online in Australia. It was done through an agent. It's probably a good idea to get the tickets online as it's high season and the train's very popular. :-)

HI,
It's looks like a good itinerary..these days having a issue with Sri Lanka Railways as Engine drivers started a strike over 4 days now.
better to arrange a taxi or self driven car from reputed Malkey/Advent/Queens or where it get's easy in holiday period to travel.
anyway good luck for holiday to Sri Lanka which is a beautiful country.

Im sure a 2 year old would love and appreciate greatly a hike up Adams Peak . Maybe you could ask it to share its thoughts on the experience with us on this forum .
