After reading Muzzamittil's blog have decided to return one more time to the Northern area's of Pakistan. Was there for a month in 1990 and thought it really was one of the most beautiful areas I have visited. Options were to go on a tour, but after much thought this would not work for me, they move too fast to enjoy the areas and the people which always was a highlight for me. I am a much older female now, won't trek anymore but enjoy day hikes(slowly), can stay in moderate accomodations run by a local families, and rent a jeep now and then ie: between Chitral and Gilgit taking a week to do it. having the freedom to change plans depending on the weather. The only thing I really want to see at a specific time is the Joshi festival in the Kalash Valleys, after that can take my time. So I am looking at flying between Islamabad and Chitral but am concerned since I hear flights get often canceled due to bad weather and to get a permit to drive from Islamabad can take more then a week,( I don't tolerate the humidity in Pindy so like to get out as soon as possible.)
After spending 2 weeks in that area plan to return to Hunza, to see the lake that formed on the Hunza river and then on to the Skardu area for a couple of weeks.
Since all the available guides are old, political situation has changed would like to know how feassable this ittinetary is.
What are the approximate costs of renting a jeep, guest house stays etc. these days
Would appreciate any info you can give me
If there is any older female who would love to do this trip ( part or all) please respond also

Thanks for your help

welcome back to Pakistan, Keep chitral and kalash last leg of the trip.my suggestion to chitral is to drive or fly back from chitral. that way you do not need any permit to drive in to chitral and out of chitral.

Bonjour from Islamabad,

In May the flights are regular due to good weather, that is spring season in Hindu Kush.

Kalash festival " Joshi, Zoshi " is in mid may in the 3 valleys of Kalash, Chitral .

In Chitral, you can stay at
Hotel Al-Farooq
Hotel Chitral Continental

Rumbur ( Kalash valley )
Ingineer Khan Kalash Guest House

Bon voyage mon ami .

Thank you all for the info.
Chitralguyimran, that is really good news, so how many days in advance do I need to be in Islamabad before taking flight. Was told that confirmation of booking was only done a day in advance and I do not want to miss the festivall. Can I private email you with some more questions?
thanks

Bonjour mon ami,

A day before the departure to Chitral seems fine.

PIA HQ Karachi confirms the seat a day before the departure by phone.

Most welcome ..

The flights from Islamabad-Chitral re not regular even in May so its better to arrive in Islamabad at least few days before & catch a flight right after ,in case of flight cancellation you could easily miss the festival if you try flight just a day or two before the Joshi festival.

15th of May is the last day of the festival in Rumbure valley & 16th of May is in Bumburate valley.

A jeep will cost about 300$ from Chitral to Gilgit over Shandur pass vice verse.

Bonjour from Islamabad,

The flights to mountainous regions ( Gilgit, Chitral and Skardu ) are dependent on prevailing weather conditions but the flight cancellation is common in winters due to wind, snow and rain.

In summers the flights are regular especially from May till September and sometimes October and November are the months.

Moreover, NATCO operates the bus service from Gilgit to Mastuj ( 3 hrs from Chitral town ) daily, some 12 hrs journey.

One could arrive in Pakistan on the 11th of May and take the flight next day to Chitral, that seems feasible.

Bon voyage ..

Exactly, the flights to Chitral, Gilgit and Skardu are very much subjected to weather conditions and even in summer it does cancels so better to reach Chitral a couple of days earlier in order to be on the safe side.
