Hi ... We planned to do the k2 trek along with gondogoro la crossing this August. However, news about the pass being closed has completely sapped the energy and excitement levels. We are being told by some people that k2 without gondogoro la is fairly boring esp the return journey. And suggestions are being made to go to snow lake instead.

Now I haven't been to either, and we are all fairly normal built without any technical experience and chances are that our next "non family " vacation of this sort will be in 5 years time. Wondering which one to go for. Is k2 without gondogoro la worth the pain?

Regards..... Atif

Ps: any news about re opening of the pass??

I hail from pakistan so it's an obvious choice for me to trek here ... Aware of the awesome scenery but just wanted to compare these specific options ... I.e snow lake or Concordia without gondogoro la ... From priority perspective ...

I havent been to either... But planning to do snowlake in August. As per the information available i have read a lot good abt this trek and i m totally positive for now. I dont have much technical expereince, have done karomber trek before ( 8-10 days of trekking).. But as i inquired from a lot of people, they say snowlake is difficult more because it needs pateince and rigorous walk... For me walking was never a problem and insha Allah it wont be in future..... a glimpse of snowlake would be worth it, I have been telling myself.

All the best man )

Its closed for locals as well ... That's why I asked.
But apparently discussions area being held by alpine and tourism bodies With military admin to re-open the pass and perhaps have a stricter security clearance process. But this is not confirmed.

I'm in Pakistan now. Just finished k2 and grand basecamps trek without going over la. It's a personal preference but for me having to return the same way was a long and very hot slog. I still got to see great mtn scenery and the extra days mean u have more chances for good weather. I didn't do snow lake but I doubt the scenery beats Concordia and above. My recommendation is if u can wait till the pass opens I would wait till then. If u want to come now but don't want to be walking over mostly rocks and boulders for at least 7 days I would do snow lake. The Baltoro is monotonous. If u go to k2 basecamp u walk for a bit on an Icier glacier which was fun but short. also I flew one way to skardu then drove back to isb via kkh. I wouldn't say the kkh south of Gilgit was spectacular enough to warrant two days in a van and a very hot overnight in chilas.

La is open now But you must wait 30 days or so for a permit and take a liaison officer w your group meaning approx extra cost of $ 2000 for the group

I'm glad I did the trek. A true adventure. Tough physically and mentally but I made my dream of seeing and visiting k2 and surrounding peaks a reality.
