We are planning to travel from Islamabad to Gilgit in a few days. Decided it is better to fly than to take the 18 hour bus up the KKH. It seemed neither comfortable nor safe to travel in the dark and in the monsoon season, especially since 16 August where 25 Shia Muslims were killed on one of these buses - obviously this should not affect foreigners but still one would not want to be there if something were to happen.

We got the ticket issued in Delhi, told we are on a waiting list, PIA said they are not authorized to tell us how many people are on the waiting list and what our chance of getting on the flight is on that day.

This is a special flight subject to the weather and PIA's whims, which I imagine is now even more oversubscribed since the events of
16th August. We are going to be told 24 hours before departure whether we are on the flight or not.

Does anyone know, is everyone with a ticket for this route in the same situation i.e. on a waiting list, or are some people already confirmed for the flight and the only way we can board that day is if they do not turn up or cancel? Are many flights getting cancelled this time of year?

We don't want to wait around Islamabad for more than two days. If we can't fly, is it easy to just turn up at the Pir Wadhai bus stand in Rawalpindi in the morning and get on a NATCO bus or is it advisable to reserve seats the day before?

Many thanks,
camels

I wouldn't worry. The weather is pretty stable at this time of year and flight cancellations are not common. Also, assuming you paid the foreigner price for your tickets, you'll get priority over locals (except for parliamentarians, judges and brigadiers) in the event of overbooking or delays.

The 'confirmation 24 hours before travel' thing applies to everyone. The good thing is that PIA will call you, so make sure you've provided a reliable contact number. In the bad old days -- two or three years ago -- you had to go to the airport in person the day before travel to confirm your flight.

The bus ride is really, really long and uncomfortable.

Bonjour from Chitral,

Flight cancellation is pretty common these days though it's strange, because the monsoon seem very unfriendly this year.

Islamabad-Gilgit flights cancelled today.

Islamabad-Peshawar-Chitral flights have been on cancellation list since 23rd of August due to bad weather condition on the route over Dir Kohistan.

Better to reserve the seat a week before departure, and one'd need to buy the ticket in the next 12 hrs after the reservation from any PIA ticketing center in Pakistan.

NATCO buses from Pirwadhai bus terminal don't leave in the morning but in the evening and night time these days soon after the troubles in Naran, Kaghan valley.

They don't make reservation nowadays but one's to be there a few hours before the departure to buy the ticket.

Ciao,

A huge landslide near Gonar farm between Chilas and Gilgit on KKH blocked the highway last night though it's been cleared for cars and light traffic but the travelers on KKH should plan carefully because the rains have done damage in Kaghan valley to the road especially the Jhalkhad and Besal area.

Yes the 24 hours confirmation is applied on every one, including foreigners & Pakistanis.

The PIA officials operating a C'130 (army plane) to Gilgit in these days due to volatile law & order situation on KKH & Babusar pass & the flights re regular in these days to Gilgit as well as Chitral.

Well we got on the flight on the date we wanted ok.. but we had to pay extra. When we called PIA the evening before they said they had no confirmed economy seats available, only economy plus seats which cost about 30% more than economy. So we went along with it, but when we got on the plane there were many empty economy seats, so I think PIA were not honest. It was a fantastic flight though, amazing views.

you were indeed lucky to get the seats and the uncancelled flight! 30% is too less for that good luck, imo ;-) Without being a fan of PIA, I don't think they were dishonest, imo, their flawed booking system and the flight uncertainty are the culprits...
