Thanks for reply! Were you able to get a multiple 6 month visa? The site says you can obtain only single entry visa and for a multiple you need to go to your homeland.

I've just applied for Indian visa in Islamabad. I came to the shuttle service at about 8-45 and at 9-15 was in front of the embassy. There was about 50-100 Pakistanis waiting but no feeling of "crowds". No foreigners also. The main thing is to indicate to guards that you are not Pakistani which was not obvious in my case and that you need to go to another counter.

The visa officer was asking lots of questions but mostly out of curiosity as I think. I was promised a 6 month visa but was refused in getting a multiple-entry visa. The officer offered me a double one. After 5 minutes of bargaining we agreed on a triple.=) I was told to come after 1 week and 2 days with an option to check after 1 week if my passport is ready. Visa fee was 4100 pak rupees.

I also just applied for an Indian visa in Islamabad. I walked directly to the embassy from Aabpara Market (about a 30 min walk) and entered the enclave from the south-west corner on Constitution Ave, so I didn't have to take the infamous shuttle. The guards were extremely helpful in pointing me in the right direction. I arrived at the embassy around 8:45 and waitied with a somewhat large group of Pakistan people. The majority of these people were waiting for a different counter. Just before opening at 9:30, the security guard allowed me to go first to counter number 3, which also handles business visas. I was asked where I had been in Pakistan, where I wanted to go in India, and for how long. I gave two application forms (typed) and my passport. I was given a single entry 6 month visa for 5,900 rupees. I am an American passport holder. He said it would be ready in 7 days (1 week from the day of submitting my application).
