It can better visited as a day trip from Lahore. Hire a car which will take you there and then back to Lahore. Most people do it in this way.

There is no hotel accommodation right at the Salt mine but there few hotels at the Kheora town.
Better hire a car from Lahore,its about 35 minutes drive off the motorway.

Looking at Google Maps should give you the directions - it is a fairly simple drive via the motorway.
You may consider combining with a visit to the Khetas temples which are another hours drive from the salt mines - the road between the two is pretty spectacular also (winding through the salt range mountains).
For sleeping you could head a little further north up the motorway and stay at the PTDC hotel at Kallar Kahar - its nothing special but you get a nice lake view and some peace and quiet.
