Hi all. I recently spent 5 weeks working with VSN in Nepal. I was working with children in 2 different orphanages. Not sure how they used to be, but when I was there I observed them to be profit-driven and not really focussed on their programs (eg. they are building a private school to make money from the fees paid by students to attend - the senior staff spent all their time over-seeing construction). There were 10 volunteers working in construction, with children in orphanages, teaching and in the medical sector. Most of us struggled to find things to do as it wasn't a structured volunteer program. While the fees may be less than other organisations, it is clear that the majority of the money is not being spent on the programs - it is being spent on administration eg. employing staff who don't work most of the time (eg. there are 4 language trainers employed to give new volunteers language training. When there are no new volunteers, they don't work). Unfortunately I can't recommend this organisation.
