Hi,
We are planning a trip to India in the beginning of June. After in the mid of June we plan to visit Nepal. I read a lot about weather in Nepal in June - it's a beginning of monsoon time. But still have doubts, because most of suggestions were referring to trekking activity. What about if we just visit Kathmandu and surroundings? Chitwan and Pokhara? Just chilling around. Is it doable?

Hi,
It's doable for sure, but I'd avoid Chitwan then (hot hot hot)

What places would you recommend to visit in summer?

There is so much to see and do in the Kathmandu valley alone (great restaurants and bars in Thamel, old Kathmandu, Bouddhanath, Pushapatinath, Swayambhunath...), plus Bhaktapur, and Bandipur on the way to Pokhara. It won't be raining all day and the views will not be great but you might also be lucky.

Thanks a lot for your reply!
Can you advise me if it's worth going to Darjeeling and from there enter Nepal? Is there anything interesting? Road conditions are okay?

Darjeeling will also be wet and no good views in that season. Maybe not so good for the Siliguri - Darjeeling train. If you enter Nepal from that side you can stop at the Kashi Tappu wildlife reserve (wetland, birds) and at Janakpur (temple). The Terai (lowlands) in Nepal has strong 'Indian' character. I crossed the border at Kakarbhitta near Siliguri(easy), don't know about the crossing near Darjeeling.

We spent the last couple of days of May in Koshi for birding. It is more than hot and very humid but the birding was great. Many of the lodges are closed.

We spent the afternoon, night and following morning in Janakpur -- hot but didn't arrive until afternoon and didn't go out until about 5 in the afternoon and it was very do able. Spent the morning at or in the area of the Janakpur Women's Development Center -- again very doable weather wise.

Chitwan is hot and humid. We went out in the mornings for 3 or 4 hours but after going out at 4 in the afternoon on our first day we made the decision to rest on the future afternoons -- just too hot. Again great birding plus rhinos, mongoose, barking and spotted deer, and mosquitos.

We crossed at Kakarbhitta and believe this is the only crossing open in this area for foreigners. Crossed in a down pour but was very easy and I have to say, "fast".

Road from border crossing to Chitwan by way of Koshi was a good road and easy to drive (we are driving our U.S. Toyota 4Runner). The road north from Chitwan is under construction and very dusty -- bounced all over the road for what seemed forever. The roads around Bhaktapur for the most part are in poor shape.

Currently in Bhaktapur, Nepal and will move on to Katmandu in two days.
