Hello,
My fiancé and I would like to do some trekking for about 5-6 days around the Jomsom/Kagbeni/Muktinath area in July- monsoon season- (with two days on either end reserved from getting to and from Kathmandu). We are thinking to not book anything (transport or accommodation) until we arrive in the area to be flexible around weather and our acclimation to the altitude. Is this a good or bad idea?

I know a flight from Pokhara (after a flight or bus from Kathmandu) is the quicker and pricier way, but if we flew one way, is there an over-land option to get back to Kathmandu from the lower Mustang area? How is this booked if so? Thank you for any and all advice.

Not doing advanced booking is a good idea.

The overland journey is a long one but very doable: about a dozen buses leave from Jomsom to Pokhara daily starting from 0700h. This leg takes around 11hrs. Next leg is Pokhara to Ktm

Book the return bus at any reputable travel agencies in Jomsom or just turn up at bus stand and ask bus drivers lije I did

Thank you for your reply. How much did the bus cost per person? Thanks!

You can hike down at least to Kalopani or possibly to Ghasa or Tatopani, where at least one daily bus originates. During the monssoon, possibly landslides can block this road at some point.

#5 : Great reply! "Bone crushing" is an outstanding (and accurate) description of all bus rides between Muktinath and Beni (Jomsom, Tatopani, etc).
