will it be possible to leave kathmandu after picking up my indian visa one evening, and be in india the next day?

or is that not feasible?

say I get my visa on a Monday, and leave that night. how soon could I get to Varanasi?

I'm clueless on the subcontinent. any and all help appreciated.

From Ktm to Varanasi takes 24-36 hours, depending on if you have to wait for the border to open. You can get a bus to take you all the way, but I prefer a local bus to the border, stay the night in a hotel and enjoy the last of the cheaper Nepalese delights, walk across the border, then get Indian transport onwards.

I exagerated a bit there on the timeline, it's about 12 hours to the border, but I don't recall any buses leaving Ktm in the evening, ask around.
