Hi, I would like to inform everybody that currently the border crossing at Kakarbitta (onwards to West Bengal, India) is closed due to unstable security situation. The reason are the attempts of bhutanese refugees stationed in Nepal to cross border to India (and subsequently to Bhutan), about 15.000 of them are protesting (violence seen and reported).
We returned from the border on May 31th following the clashes between refugees and Indian as well as Nepali police (not a nice feeling). We rather took the plane from the nearby domestic airport of Bhadrapur on our way back to KTM.
WE DO NOT RECOMMEND TO travel there anybody unless you check the situation with indian embassy in KTM. Do not believe the locals in KTM, they dont know anything about the situation at the border!!!!!!
Under normal circumstances, the journey from KTM to Kakarbitta takes 14 hours (fyi, 800 nepali rupees). In our case it took 35 hours and inludes several stopsovers due to road blokages causes by strikes in the villages (no possibility of detour).

I agree. Very good and timely information (in my case). I was planning a trip to KTM in July. Still its a month away. Let's see how the situation develops.
Is there a reliable source of information whom can update about the border conditions? A travel agent at the border, may be?

The only reliable source is the indian embassy in KTM. Information from locals (also in KKbitta) were irresponsible.
Where is Indian embassy located in KTM (geez, I am an Indian citizen myself)? Is it that you just walk in and ask anyone about border situation that you meet there? Thanks.

you can cross in/out via biratnagar as well. but then you'll hvae to travel via bihar to get to wherever..
happy travelling

Because they aren't bhoti but nepali-speaking southern bhutanese. There are claims that the bhutanese govt is prejudiced against them.
Similar to a place like darjeeling where most of the "indians" are nepali-speaking or are nepalis/sherpas..since darjeeling is a part of west bengal, the darjeeling gokrha council have always been working for an independent state/union territory status in india.
