Rabies terror

-By Damodar Thapa-

Two girls were bitten by a mad dog 15 days ago in Kholakochheu [18 km ZO Pokhara] and due to financial problem the mother of the girls could not take them to hospital for the anti rabies vaccine. Some other 5 children were also bitten by same dog and same day. The dog died after two days. I heard this news from media this morning that two girls are staying at home even after mad dog bite as the mother don't have money for vaccine. When I heard this, I felt pity on those girls and tried to find them. I came into contact with the mother of these girls and took ambulance to hospital and vaccinated. They need 5 vaccines each which cost about Rs 7000 for full course for two. Today I am very happy when I met these two girls and being able to save their lives.

Brother, in Lekhnath area (ZO Pokhara) the terror of rabies has been increasing. People spotted mad dogs few days ago and these dogs started to bite human as well. Now the municipal has started to kill all the street dogs and vaccinating other animals. Still people have feared when a doctor was bitten by street dogs when he was in course of vaccinating. Today I have heard near Begnas Bazar a buffalo went mad as well. To take rabies under control , killing street dogs and vaccinating have to be intensify up to Pokhara, whole area of Lekhnath, boarding area of Rupakote, Hansapur, Kalika, Majhthana, Deurali and Bharatpokhari VDCs from where animals are passing in and out. In Pokhara municipal will take steps and in plain parts of Lekhnath our municipal is doing its best but in hilly parts of Lekhnath and other neighboring villages no one is taking care. It is very urgent to organize awareness program for vaccinating animals and controlling street dogs before situation goes worse. It is pity that no one has been paying any attention for these area. Today I phoned to livestock service center of Lekhnath and reminded them possible threat from those areas. They told me that they are busy in Plain area of Lekhnath and they can give free technical support for awareness program and controlling streets dogs as well as vaccination but they don't have budget for the expense of foods, management dumping of killed animals and so on.

Many thanks, Theo.
