hello,

we r a family of 3 going to do the Poonhill trek in two weeks.

how much is it okay to give a tip to the porter? he will guide us of course and will carry our big bag.

Basic rule is 15% of the salary. In this case maybe 15% from $20 per day or so, making $15 or about 1500 NRs. This is from the group, not from each member.

Of course you can take the quality of the service into consideration also, but please do not overtip. Salary should be the compensation, not the tip, which is just the tip. Even the $20/day the fellow is making is well above the average daily wage in Nepal, about five times more than what a policeman or a teacher earns, almost as much as the prime minister's salary $800/month.

Tip is culture like obligation but not obligation in the Nepalese trekking. I heard porters talking a lot when they get tip as much as their salary meaning they are highly motivated. 50% of salary is also very good. 25% of salary is good and I think 15% to 20% is very normal.
