Another vote for Pilgrims! I was there last year and loved Pilgrims GH. Was clean with a nice garden where you could meet other travellers or have a chat with the staff who are really friendly. You can also bargain a little if you are on a budget but it's very worth the price you pay.

Maybe a bit more, but I paid $15 a night for a very nice double at the Utse, also in Thamel. Very clean safe, and the staff was professional.

Is the lodging Referral Service still active at the airport arrival section?
In1995 I told them my wishes, and they sent me to "Snow Lion" -- a very nice, small but isolated (quiet) place in DhobiChar, slightly southwest of Thamel. I never would have found it on my own; yet was very satisfied with the referral.
