I stayed at the Thamel Guest House - Thamel. It's in a laneway off one of the main streets.

It's quite cheap and very safe. Doors are locked at night to prevent anyone coming in and the rates are very good.

Kathmandu Guest House is the old time classic place. It's good because everybody knows where it is and they have rooms at all price ranges. Plus they have sculptures of a "Frog on a Penis" on the outside walls. There are a hundred others to choose from though.

I suppose Kathmandu Guest House is a bit Expensive... Hotel Florid Nepal near Kathmandu Guest House is best in rate and service too...check website and say refrenced by Ananta, you will get best room and good price..

Kathmandu Guest House is my favorite, too. It's very popular. Book ahead if you want to stay there.

Although I wouldn’t disagree with the above recommendations for the Kathmandu Guesthouse, I Personally think it’s a bit expensive for what you get !!
Pilgrims Guesthouse is Definitely safe and about 25 % cheaper and if you want a real bargain try the Kathmandu View Guesthouse next door where you can get a Really Nice en-suite room, with Hot water, towels and toilet paper for less than $10 per night (Much less if you bargain well) and can go back next door to Pilgrims to eat and meet up with people in their garden

Hi there,

What do you think about the Northfield Hotel? I have a reservation there because KTM GH is fully booked.
Has anyone slept there?

For the first time, tentative traveller, the old standby of Kathmandu Guest House would be the one I'd recommend. Sure you pay a bit extra, arrange for an airport transfer, they do have a lot of tourist friendly infrastructure, ie pizza place on site, ATM, post box, etc, it is one of the most popular backpacker places and smack in the middle of the backpacker area and check out their website, you can choose from a range of accommodation.
