Can you recommend a place, within a day's travel from Kathmandu, where I can spend a few nights at an altitude at 3000m or higher? I am in Kathmandu now and I leave for an overland tour to Tibet on Tuesday, so I don't have a lot of time. The tour has a great altitude increase the first two nights and, thus, it would be better to acclimitize.
I have no guide book, so please include information about transportation, accomodation, and what to do while I'm at the location that you recommend, if possible.
Sorry for the repetition (from a few posts ago), but my question was not answered and I feel that it warranted another post for clarification.
Thanks,
Hal Fischer

Just returned from Nepal this month..went up to 14k feet going past Namche Bazaar..then on the return to Kathmandu spent a night/day at The Fort in Nargakot..this lovely setting is a hill station situated on the rim of the valley..I would not consider this a place to aclimate for your trip to Tibet ..but there was some nice day hikes that we took advantage of....it is 2000m and about a 90 minute drive from Kathmandu..
The proper method to get aclimated if needed is to "trek high...then come down low to spend the night"....Since you are going overland into Tibet you might/might not have a problem...
Have you considered taking Diamox to help ward off altitude sickness..be sure to be well hydrated

One clarification...acclimating will not be benificial unless you are acclimating at about the altitude that you will experience in Tibet..my experience is that most people experience AMS at nothing less than 12k feet.....I personally have experienced AMS at about 15k feet..
Just as a point of reference Lukla is at 9k feet approx...most people acclimate in Namche Bazaar as a precaution before going onward...you never know when and if you will be struck by AMS
Hope this helps..

Sorry to disapoint you, but don't think it's possible to get to 3000 metres and back to KTM unless you get a helicopter somewhere, but wouldn't be worth the effort.

You have a week, so you could fly to Lukla, then trek to Phakding on the first day. Second day trek to Namche and stay two nights. Fourth day trek back to Phakding or all the way to Lukla. Fly back to KTM the next morning.
The first village on the Tibetan plateau is Nyalam at about 12,500'. If your tour stays there two nights you will have a reasonable opportunity to acclimate. Else you will hit two high passes past Nyalam.
