Thanks, lifesupport. Apart from the hassle of having to go to the ministry of immigration to get an extension, would I be able to get one BEFORE I set off on my trek so in advance? Is it a straighforward process or very long queues, lots of forms to fill out, etc etc..Trying to find out if it is at all worth it! Thanks!

Although the OP has move don form this a clarification on the costs of overstaying might be useful to others:

An overstay r'egularised' at the airport costs the amount you would have been charged to extend the visa plus a fine of $3 per day. Thsu an 8 day overstay costs $30 to regularise because that's the minimum charge for an extension ($2 per day is incomplete information) and $24 fine, total $54

Note that immigration officers at the airport have the 'power' to regularise overstays for up to 15 days beyond that, you will be sent to the immigration office in KTM and therefore miss your flight. Given this is a power not a 'duty' it's possible to be sent back to immigration for shorter overstays.

On 20 March, 2018 I extended my visa at the Department of Immigration.
30 Days cost $60.
I paid 6230r.

I asked why it was not $30.
I was told, "It changes. Today you pay $60".

Which is exactly correct. The visa extension is $2 per day as noted in this thread previously. Thirty dollars buys you 15 days; you bought 30 days, it cost $60.
