Arriving in Nepal next week and would like to do Makalu Base Camp trek up Arun Valley. We don't really want to carry camping equipment but in my lonely planet book it indicates there are no lodges after a while and one needs to be self sufficient. This book was published in 2001 and I have since heard there now may be accomodation up to just before base camp. Is there anyone who might have info on this and have any guide names with contact information. Any help would be appreciated.

Most of the area inside the Makalu Barun National Park requires self-sufficiency. There is little in the way of places to stay above Tashigaon - approx 6 days north of Tumlingtar, the second stop inside the park boundaries.. You also must have sufficient fuel, and food for two weeks. The Makalu Barun area is much less developed than the Everest or Annapurna area - it's more similar to the upper reaches of the Kanchenjungha route in terms of local development

Yes,it is rare to organize tea house trek however only few houses are available while you go up from Tashigaon. If you are ready to make trek with normal way then you can not have any thing except Nepali dal & bhat.May be you can take some dry food with you and make the trek with some nepalese assistant.

I am doing this trek in October. Everything that I've read still supports stilltrekkin's comments. I am taking support for a camping trek.
