Hi, I'm planning on traveling to Nepal next spring and I'm am in the process of planning a couple of longer treks. I would like to trek independently to Makalu basecamp from Tumultingar , and then from Tumultingar to Lukla. I am wondering if there are enough tea houses along this route to allow for independent trekking. I would like to begin the trek in early March, but I'm worried that whatever tea house might be available, won't be open so early in the season. I'd appreciate any information or advice from someone that has been there recently. Thanks so much!

Hi,

Ther are definitely tea houses between Tumlingtar and Lukla not so sure if they extend all the way up to Makalu basecamp though.

Yes the Makalu BC trek can be done entirely in lodges. But they close in winter, i'm not sure at all they reopen early March, more probably later in March. Maybe you can do it in the opposite direction, Makalu BC at the end.

There are teahouses all the way to basecamp - here's a blog I wrote some years ago with descriptions each:

Some were damaged in the earthquake but were repaired since.
It is unlikely anything beyond Tashigaon will be open early march.

Cheers,
Mick
