Hey,

I read in the 'trekking in nepal' lonely planet recently that you cant bring indian roupees into nepal?

Is this true? I will be in Delhi for a couple of days before flying to KTM.

Thanks

Karen

Hi! Karen
it is true that you can use Indian currency in Nepal but they don't accept a bill of Indian rs 500.00 and Rs 1000.00 because it is not officially allowed. so you should becarefull with big bills.
Thanks

Rupee notes 100 and smaller are well-accepted in Nepal.

Hello, Karen,

In Nepal, Indian Rupee cant be accepted from any foreigner. If you are Indian then above reply # 1 and # 2 is applicable, otherwise it is illegal to accept Indian rupee.

What I suggest you is, please do not convert too much Indian money from your currency so that there will be not any problem for you.

Secondly you may use your credit cards. In India and Nepal Visa and Master credit cards are widely accepted by hotels, restaurants, shops, travel agencies etc. If you have any problem then you may deal with us for your any requirements. We accept Visa credit cards for your any requirements in Nepal.

To the best of my knowledge it is illegal to take Rupees out of the country. Obviously it happens but that could be the explanation.

#5 is correct that INR are a non-convertable currency. Therefore it is technically illegal to take them from th country. I have half of a 100R note in my pocket. Was that illegal as I imagine that half of a note is no longer legal tender?
