Hi,
I am fortunate enough to be sent out with work to Pune in India for 4 weeks and have taken 10 days holiday to get a bit of trecking in, in Nepal before I start. They have organised the flights to Delhi from London, but I've been finding it impossible to get to Kathmandu from delhi.
I have since found this to be a popular and sometimes over subscribed flight path, but does anyone have any advice on other modes of transport over there?
A coach/bus or train, or possibly a combination needed to get there. Any idea on travel times and how I go about booking this?
Many Thanks
James

Flights: Jet, Indian.
Train to Gorakphur from Delhi, bus to border, cross border, and then bus to KTM.
search below. question is asked pretty much daily. if i were you, i'd scrap the plans to go to nepal and go trek in the Indian himalaya. Darjeeling/Sikkim would be the natural choice. easy to get there and flights will be ready available to bagdogra from delhi. Even though darjeeling/sikkim is India, you feel like you are in Nepal...singalila ridge trek for 5-6 days would be a fine option with excellent views.
happy travelling

Hi
I flew this route with Indian Airlines earlier this year – they have several flights daily so I would have thought that they should be able to get you on one of them !!
It is worthwhile making the effort to go to Nepal as it makes such a change from the hustle and bustle of India
I have written a few ideas of whet to do, see, where to stay and eat on

See tips at the bottom of the page
It might be of help

Flights with Cosmic Air, Jet Airways, Indian Airlines, Sahara Airlines or Royal Nepal Airlines from Delhi to Kathmandu cost about 100 Dollar. (Flight time 1 hour, 30 minutes)
Overland from Delhi to Kathmandu:
Delhi to Gorakhpur (train, 16 hours)
Gorakhpur to Sunauli/Bhairawa (border) (bus, 3 hours)
Bhairawa - Kathmandu (bus, 9 hours)
The train and bus combo costs about 20-60 Dollar, depending on the quality of the busses and the class on the train. The overland route is long and tiring. Overcrowded trains and busses, bumpy roads... but more interessting than a flight.
If you only have 10 days take a plane.

A lot of seats are blocked out by travel agents. Your chances of arranging a flight will be a lot better once you're in Delhi.

yes, delhi-ktm flights are fully booked for a while now.
if you want to fly, no problem catching a flight to calcutta and on to ktm. both sectors are easy to book.
train/bus options already mentioned above, but you'll waste too much time/energy on it (with your schedule limitations).
do not think that darjeeling and sikkim compare to nepal. they are nice in their own ways, but are clearly not nepal. only great option in that region is the northmost regions of sikkim that require special tours/permits(beyond the norm sikkim permit). stick to nepal !!!
if you must to india, head for ladakh (leh). it is equally impressive as nepal, yet in a very different (dry) way.

and, if you have even the slightest spiritual inclinations, the osho meditation resort in pune is (for me) one of the most delightful places in the world. if you are a dancer of meditation, dance, and silence, and wish to step away from the busyness of pune's ambitious, unplanned growth, explore this place and it's stunning architecture/gardens. truly a first class experience.
(req's some easy formalities to enter)
just outside of pune is lonalva and kandala (is it?), two hill station towns on the road to bombay. both are a bit indian touristy and pricey (poor value for the price), but lovely in their own way.
