Namaste,

last year when I was trekking in Nepal, therte was a new law about porters and guides. ANY foreigner taht wanetd to go trekking would be only allowed to do so with a guide or a porter. I even got checked in Jiri at the checkpoint wheter I have one. I've heard that this law is no longer in practice, so my question is: can I go from Jiri to Lukla without a guide or a porter ? Will I get through a checkpoints without them ? Thanks

Short answer..."Yes". The Trek Reistration Certificate requirements have never been re-implemented to date, so there are no restrictions. But I could give you lots of reasons why you should take someone who knows the area well. There is more to guiding that getting from Point A to Point B - and from my experience, I think you will miss out on a lot of the great experiences and memories that come from travelling with someone who knows the language and culture of the country.

Hi stilltrekkin.....
I do get to read many of your posts here and I am glad to get a reply from you :)
Many thanks for your answer....I do have to say that I agree on what you've said about sharing the trip with someone....I will have "my" guide in Lukla, thats why I was wondering if I can do the trek from Jiri by myself, I just thought rather than dragging him all the way to KTM and back to Lukla I can meet him there...I have done this trek before and still, I think I can meet many interesting people :) I am planning to do the Makalu Base camp trek, by any chance, woudl you have some useful info please ?
Many thanks

If you are meeting the Guide in Lukla, I assmue you are crossing the Salpa Pass to the Makalu Barun National Park. There are basic lodges available along this route but once in the Park itself you need to be prepared to camp, as you are probably aware. An interesting alternative when you leave the Park is to head south into the Arun Valley to Taplejung and Hille where you can get a bus and travel back to Kathmandu. Different cultures and environment on this alternate route. Great trek! Enjoy your time.
