Hi everyone,
I'm trying to get from Kathmandu to mainland China (preferably Chengdu, or near there) as quickly and cheaply as possible. AFAIK, China Souther and Air China both fly to Chengdu. However, the prices we have been quoted have been absolutely extortionate. We have been quoted 440 USD through to 13 000 Chinese yuan!!!
I have read on the board that a few people have been able to get cheaper tickets than this from Kathmandu into mainland China (one post wrote that a ticket from Kathmandu to Beijing was $390 USD, and a friend from Nepal has told me he managed to get a one way ticket from Kathmandu to Guangzhou for $250 USD, which is a lot better than the prices I have received).
I was wondering if anyone has had any recent luck with flying out of Nepal to mainland China - what airlines did you use, and did you have to scrounge for a ticket or was it a standard price?
I'm also investigating the possibility of entering India and flying out of there. You can get an Indian transit visa for cheap from Kathmandu. I was wondering if anyone has had any recent experiences with this. One post I have read said that they got a flight from SE Asia into Delhi for about $320 USD, then got a train from Delhi to Gorakhpu for about $20, which is really close to the Nepalese border.
Thanks in advance.
Taras

I posted the infomation on flying to Delhi.
Just now looked on the Kayak web site and I found a flight to KL from Delhi for about $260, and then found an AirAsia flight from KL to Hanoi for about $30. From there you could take the train.
But for all the hassle that would involve, I'd pay the $440!
Perhaps you could just sign up for a "tour" to Lhasa (my memory may be wrong here, but I think you can get a basic one for $200) and then take the train to Chengdu. Not all that quick though.
