Hi folks, i have a free SkyMile ticket to Delhi that i'm going to use on Aug 19.
But i want to try and get to Kathmandu right away without leaving the airport.
So my questions:
1) do you recommend waiting till i arrive in Delhi and just hopping on the next flight to Kathmandu (and would this be ridiculously expensive?? i'm trying to keep costs down)
2) if you recommend buying a ticket in advance roundtrip from Dehli to Kathmandu, any advice on a good rate or travel agent or airline?
3) i've heard that flights can be delayed leaving Kathmandu. My flight back to the U.S. from Delhi leaves very late on Sept 7, around midnight. When do you advise flying back from Kathmandu to ensure i make this connecting flight? I'm looking to maximize my stay in Nepal, without going into Delhi at all, if possible.
All replies welcome, thanks for your thoughts and time!!

1. there aren't too many flights to ktm from delhi so you just can't arrive in delhi and hope to be out on the next flight. even if you could, you'd pay a premium price. jet/indian airways fly there (maybe other airlines also, but i'm not aware of them). i've flown with jet.
2. i got a good deal on jet airways but i had special coupons...
3. you should try to get to delhi a day or two before your outbound international flight...you don't want to risk missing that..

an extra day in kathmandu (as opposed to delhi) isn't going to make much difference.. there is enough to see in delhi to keep you busy for a 4-5 days... also going to kathmandu during monsoons (august)....might want to rethink that though ktm is visitable year around...
happy travelling

I wouldn't try to fly into Delhi without prebooking a flight out simply because of the visa requirements. You can't get a visa on arrival in India so if you show up without one you may be screwed if you can't get an onward flight to KTM. To be safe I would get a multi-entry visa for India to cover both ends of the round trip.

Based on the fact that you won't be in India at all (won't leave the airport at Delhi) I would recommend buying a roundtrip from Delhi to Kathmandu beforehand. That way you don't need to worry about any kind of visa to India. You should find flights at around USD 350 to USD 400 for a roundtrip.

If you don't/can't get an Indian visa before departure then you'll need to prebook the DEL-KTM ticket in advance. With Jet airways you can do this via their US office, although it involves faxing a copy of your CC. Without a transit visa you will have a long wait at the Delhi airport in both directions. Given that you are on Skymiles I assume you are travelling via Paris on AF/Delta. Even if the flights are delayed you will have plenty of time to make the connection.
