I'm going to be flying from Bangkok to Nepal, and then back to Bangkok. So far, the cheapest was of booking that I've found is the Thai Airways website. Anyone know of a better way?

How flexible will Thai be with departure dates? I know I'll be getting into Nepal on a particular date, but I'd like some flexibility on the departure. Will I be able to leave early? Move my flight until later without a penalty?

I'm not sure how long I'll spend trekking and how much time I'd like to spend in Kathmandu or Pokhara afterward.

Thanks.

No there is no better way. There may be a new airline plying the route (appart from Thai and Nepali Airline) but I am not sure if they are operating. I would definitely use Thai, maybe fly business, as the difference is only about 180 USD. Thai is one of the top 10 airlines in the world, and definitely the best airline flying into KTM.

I think most Thai KTM-BKK fares are fully refundable and changeable if there is space available, but that's a big "if". During Nov 2005 (high season), we made several visits to the Thai office in Kathmandu in hopes of advancing our departure date. They put us on the waitlist but space never opened up. They were willing to endorse our ticket over to Royal Nepal Airlines, which had space, but we viewed that as a last resort. Finally we went to the KTM airport in hopes that Thai would have a couple of empty seats and no one else would bother going to all that effort to fly standby. In fact, over a dozen people were there ahead of us, and the agent said we had little chance -- but we sat around for a couple of hours and made it on the flight. So there are a few options for you, none of them perfect.

I've heard that buying tickets in Thailand is cheaper than pre-booking them online- can anyone verify that? Should you do this at the airport, or is it better to use travel agents in town? The I've also read that the cheapest way to Nepal from Thailand is via Calcutta (and then overland by train) - can anyone confirm that one too? Thanks!
