Hi all! - First post on the forums!

Thinking about putting together a relatively short Nepal trekking trip / mountain break with a few friends in Jan / Feb next year and just wanted to tap your collective mind on itinerary, feasibility & common sense - I have attached a list of potential treks that I am thinking about at the moment (which would mostly follow the GHT low route) to give you a better idea of what I am thinking

Potential Treks
1. Rolwaling: Jiri -->Barabise - 6 days hiking + 2 days Travel back and forth
2. Helambu: Barabise -->Betrawati - 6 days hiking + 2 days Travel back and forth
3. Manaslu & Ganesh Himal: Betrawati--> Gorkha - 5 days hiking + 2 days Travel back and forth
4. And maybe something in Annapurna, but i think travel time would reach diminishing returns here

Questions
1. Winter Conditions: What are the general conditions like over winter in Nepal, will the paths be passable in these regions (assuming we stay below 3,000m)?
2. Availability of guesthouses/food: As this trip would be well and truly into the down season what is the likelihood that we would be able to find open guest/tea houses & eateries - more worried about food as we can camp if necessary.
3. Necessity of a guide: would it be foolish to attempt this unguided? If so what is the availability of guides like over the winter period?
4.Itinerary: Given that we want to spend as much time as possible in the mountains, with hopefully a few glimpses of the 7,000 + meter peaks, are these good routes or would we be better off on something else?

Any help, guidance or thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Re trekking in Nepal in the winter (ie Dec - Feb). I have now done 7 treks at that time of year, from 2010 to 2016.

This is an updated post from 2013 about trekking in the winter: https://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/forums/asia-indian-subcontinent/nepal/mid-winter-trekking-in-nepal-an-updated-post-november-2013

I will update this post again at some point, as it does not include my 3 most recent mid winter treks in Nepal.

My mid winter treks include the 3 main trekking areas, ie:

The Everest region, the 3 High Passes trek which I have done 3 times.

Langtang - Gosainkunda - Helambu.

The full Annapurna Circuit twice.

I also did Langtang valley and tried to get to Gosainkunda again in 2014-15, but that was the only mid winter trek significantly affected by snow (in fact the weather was poor across much of Nepal from about Oct 2014 until about late Feb 2015).

I think you should expect most of the trails to be quiet, or very quiet. It was for this reason that I originally started trekking with a guide (as it turned out we got on really well, and this has developed and opened other doors such as staying several times in their very non tourist village).
