Hey there,
I'm heading to Nepal for 4 weeks of trekking. I'd love to do the EBC round and Island Peak. However, I'm uncertain on how to procede best. I've inquired complete tours (e.g. with Himalayan Ecstasy). However, they only offer either 4 days of Island Peak (joining in Chukung) or 17 days Island Peak round trip however without EBC! (for 2250 USD).

Can I find a guide in Nepal for hire to go to EBC and then join in Chukung and what, have my guide waiting for 4 days? How much would this be?
Any recommendations how I can do both, EBC and Island Peak, cheapest?

I've read a guide is not necessarily needed for EBC but since I'm a woman travelling alone, I feel more comfortable doing EBC with a guide as well.

Hope anyone can report from their own experiences.

Cheers
Isabel

If you have found an agency offering a 4 day Imja Tse climb you are already half way there! Finding a porter-guide to take you to EBC first is easy. Naturally you need to pay his salary for the wait days, but that is minor expenditure compared to the total cost of the trip (less than $100 for a porter-guide). I would suppose that Himalayan Ecstasy could easily arrange a porter-guide for you, should cost about $20-25/day. I would not take just a guide because with climbing gear and extra warm clothing your pack will be a bit heavier than normal.

Plan you EBC visit so that there are a couple of extra days if something slows you down you still make it to Chukhung for the climb. If you do not need them use them to acclimatisation Hikes & climbs from Chukhung just before the climbing part.

normally, after EBC visit for peak climbing guide. I suggest you take a climbing guide as your trekking guide... even that $2250 without is high price...
Do not hesitate to drop a line if you have questions.

Good Luck!

Hi Isabel,
When are you heading there by the way? From 23 October I do the EBC - Gokyo - Cho La - Jiri trek, including the Chukung valley, and taking my time for it. I think there's a way to combine a longer trek with Island Peak without any problem. Pls send me a PM with your email for more info.

Thanks so much to you all! This was very helpful. I asked them whether they could organize a porter-guide as well and they quickly replied they can manage to do so from Lukla! Apparently, you need to explicitly ask for it...
