I am from Canada and need to stay in touch back home with the folks! In Canada our phones and such are locked and only work with the SIM Card provided by the phone provider. Has anyone had there Blackberry, etc. unlocked and then replaced with a SIM Card in Nepal.
Thanks

Buy a new phone, its cheap as chips and u jus need a passport ID to get a simcard, i bought a sim in India for 200r!!!
Overseas calls are much cheaperto make from the roadside booths and internet cafes!

You can not make or recieve calls outside Nepal and India with the Meru sim card you can buy in Nepal.
Use internet cafes and phone booths, they work and are cheaper.
I have the 8830 too and need to know if it will work in India. I've read elsewhere that you almost need differant sim cards for every state in india. is this true? will my email work? i really need to stay in touch so I thought I could get the global plan for the month I am gone. I've tried to find out at the blacberry site but to no avail. Please let me know of your experiences.
Thanks so much.
Agree with Poster #1 - local communications offices are the cheapest option for long distance. Be aware that rates vary considerably though depending on their connection, etc. In the last week I have paid 30 rupees for a 6 minute call to Canada and 390 rupees for a 10 minute call! Ask for the rate before you call - I learned my lesson quickly.

The situation with the diff states in india is that u pay extra if ur using an indian mobile in one state that u bought in another, for example, u will pay for incoming calls if u have a maharashtrian phone and ur in kerala (as happened to me!) But with simcards only being 200R, if ur spending significant time in diff states, buy a sim for each one!!!
email will work everywhere and even some of the remotest places have connections altho sometimes they can be a little slow!
