Hi,

Will be travelling in Nepal for about one month, starting from december 11th. I like hiking but for practical reasons (knees) trekking is likely to be restricted to one day hikes (or max two days). Already read a lot about places and made this global itinerary (nights are including travelling day before): Kathmandu/Kathmandu Valley/Bhaktapur-Patan-Nagarkot-Dhulikhel (8 nights), Bandipur (3 nights), Pokhara (4 nights), Bardia NP (4 nights), Pokhara (2 nights, New Years Eve), Lumbini (3 nights), Chitwan (4 nights) and back to Kathmandu (1 nights) for taking a flight to Kolkata (India).

About this a few questions:
• Good places for taking one day hikes? Already think about doing this from Nagarkot, Bandipur and Pokhara. Other recommendations?
• If I have to choose what would you recommend Nagarkot or Dhulikhel?
• New Years Eve I want to return to Pokhara for celebrating this, or are there better choices for this you think (except Kathmandu)?
• Is there a place worthwhile to stop between Bardia and Pokhara?
• Any other recommendations? Special activitities, festivals at this period of not that famous places in the regions I want to visit?

Thanks answering in advance,

Harry

Nagarkot is a tourist resort, basically a row of hotels in the forest. Dhulikhel is an historic local town set in fields (but most accomodation is away from the center).

You could also consider flying to Jomsom and going to Kagbeni, Muktinath and Marpha for a few nights.

I would not plan too much for the new year, which is not a new year in Nepal at all. Might find only a handful of westerners celebrating. How about sitting on a hotel terrace in Ranipauwa (Muktinath) with a beer in had and looking at the Dhaulagiri range in moonlight instead.

Dhulikhel is better, from my point of view.
Gorkha town along with Manakamana temple are nearby the main highway from KTM to Pokhara and worth visiting.
If you want to celebrate New Year with some other westerners (and not in KTM) Pokhara, and especially Lakeside, is your bet. There are lots of nice restaurants and cafes, German Bakery, Everest Steak House, Mike’s and other tourist favourites.
Spending a New Year somewhere in Muktinath, as it was offered to you in previous messages, also sounds nice, go to Bob Marley there for having nice time :)
If you’re going to Terai and have some time you can travel there a bit, instead of flying to India. Holy Hindu city of Janakpur and the tea plantations near Ilam are worth seeing on the way to Indian border in Kakarbhitta, from where you can easily go to Kolkata via Siliguri (there are night sleeper buses from S. to Kolkatta as far as I remember).

Hi Harry
• Good places for taking one day hikes? Already think about doing this from Nagarkot, Bandipur and Pokhara. Other recommendations? Bandipur, Dhulikhel and Pokhara for sure!
• If I have to choose what would you recommend Nagarkot or Dhulikhel? Dhulikhel if you like culture and heritage/ Nagarkot if you like nicer hotels and tourism infrastructure.
• New Years Eve I want to return to Pokhara for celebrating this, or are there better choices for this you think (except Kathmandu)? Stick with Pokhara, they put tables out on Lakeside in the Evening, just don't expect a huge celebration (no fireworks etc).
• Is there a place worthwhile to stop between Bardia and Pokhara? Not in terms of comfort. You'll probably want to rest up after the jungle and the long trip. Though you could change your loop to break up the trip by visiting Lumbini and then Bardia. So POK _ LUB - Bar. Or the like. Personally I just put my head down for the 16 hour bus trip :)
• Any other recommendations? Special activitities, festivals at this period of not that famous places in the regions I want to visit? Don't rule out Panauti. There are plenty of hikes from there or else it makes for a lovely one day visit.

Likewise heritage walks like this in Kathmandu are well worth it to see independently. Likewise walks in Thimi and again Panauti.

Bandipur is okay for 2 nights not three (up to you of course and it depends what time you get there on the first day). Likewise Lumbini unless you really want to explore the flat terrai region. There are now bicycle tours doing this.

Hope this helps.
