If I wanted to visit Bardia NP from Kathmandu - I would have 5 days max and would prefer to keep it to 4 (KTM to KTM) - what would you recommend (fly to Nepalgung and pick up by private car? where to stay? what itinerary? Treks in the area?).

Fly to Nepalgung. Then take a 2.5 to 3 hour jeep or minibus ride to the park. I stayed at Bardia Adventure Resort, and I thought they did a good job - the food was good, the guides were excellent. You should arrange your stay prior to arriving. Wherever you seek accommodations, they will pick you up at the airport and arrange to transport you to their place. Bardia Adventure Resort is a short walk from the Park entrance. Take at least one full day walking safari in the park with a guide. My guide, housed at the resort, had a motor bike, and he took me to his family's home and several neighboring villages at my request on another day. I spent a half day on an elephant safari. I spent 4 days KTM to KTM. I would recommend at least that amount.
