Hi,

I am planning to Nepal and could not decide if I should join a tour or go on my own. Everywhere else in S.E.Asia, I prefer to travel on my own. Here is a tour I found and please check for me whether they covered the best places:

D1 - Arrive KTM - Swyambhunath and KTM Durbar Square

D2 - Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur and Boudhanath Stupa

D3 - Pokhara, boating at Fewa Lake and Barahi temple

D4 - Chit Wan

D5 - Elephant-back safari

D6 - Lumbini Garden, Ashoka Pillar, Maya Dewi and a Thai monastery

D7 - Morning tour to Pashupatinath Temple

Are those places the best attractions of those areas ? Can I do them on my own easily if I don't join a tour.

Will appreciate if you guys can give some advice or where else can I add in for another 2 or 3 days. I hope to see Everest too.

What's the best time of the year to travel. I am from a hot climate country so I wish to travel in the cool months.

Thank you all !!

Those are more or less the main attractions, and you can do them by yourself also. With extra days you could add Bhaktapur (most original town in KTM valley), Daxinkali temple (sat or tue), Nagarkot for Himalayan views.

Clearest cool weather in Oct-Dec.

I'm curious about how you intend to travel in Nepal with the timings you've given. I lived there for five months and if you are travelling by public transport you're timing are very optimistic. Days 1 & 2 are possible, but you are packing a lot in. I spent two days in Bhaktaupr alone, never mind Patan.

How are you getting from Ktm to Pokhara? If you go by taxi / bus, you can kiss goodbye to seven or eight hours of your day, I would recommend you fly (about $70 USD) and takes about forty minutes.

I think naml has made some good suggestions. I too would leave Chitwan out. You don't need anyone to take you on a tour of Kathmandu, Patan or Bhaktapur. You can get a taxi to all the places you've mentioned on days 1 and 2 and walk to Durbar Square in KTM. I think you should allow a couple of days in KTM because there's a lot to see and it's a great place to chill out in. Add as many extra days as you can because there's no shortage of places to visit in Nepal. I think it's much better to fly to Pokhara. You'll save heaps of time and spare yourself a long rough bus trip.

Thanks all. How about the journey scenery between KTM and Pokhara ? I thought I can save and also see more by road.

#3, So my OP day 3, 4, 5 & 6 places are better replaced by those places you recommended ? All those day 3, 4, 5 hike and walks, how long will each take ? Are they are scenic and different ? Will it be easy ?

How about Mt Everest view ? Where to go for it ?

Is it advisable to take a road trip from KTM to Lhasa ?

You'll have a lot of trouble putting that itinerary together on your own in that amount of time which is one of the advantages of taking a tour when your time is short. Those are some great sights, so if an origanized excursion is going to be able to get you to those places AND allow you some time to enjoy them once you are there, its worth doing. Be aware that a lot of times tours get you places but you only end up with a half hour to actually enjoy the place.

Can you ride a motorcycle? The road between Ktm and Pokhara is amazing, once you get out of the valley the roads are nice and twisty. From Pokhara it's a 4 / 5 hour ride to Chitwan and there is an amazing 1 / 2 day ride back to Ktm via Daman (views of Everest). I did several trips with www.heartsandtears.com (based in Pokhara) and they organised some great tours for me. Check them out.

I'm back in Nepal in December for 5 weeks and can't wait to ride these roads again.
Good luck.
